At Nexgen Care we understand the struggles families face when deciding if a loved one needs enhanced assistance. Perhaps your mother has become forgetful or seems distant and depressed due to a lack of companionship. Maybe your father has been ill or had surgery and is too independent to follow his recuperative exercise routine. For any number of reasons, from frailty to the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia, there are times when a family member needs more assistance than it is possible or practical for other relatives to provide.

You may reject the idea of a nursing home or assisted living facility as being too permanent or premature, yet not have the ability to provide ongoing care for a parent who wants to stay in their home—or even, live at yours. Making the choice to engage compassionate professionals is not a compromise. It is an affirmative choice that will enhance your loved one’s quality of life and encourage the most beneficial possible outcome.

PSW is short for personal support worker. They are front line health care professionals in Ontario that provide direct care to the elderly or ill patients in a wide variety of settings. “PSW” is a generic title provided to an individual, they are also known as health care aides, personal attendant, visiting homemakers, respite care worker, home support worker, palliative care worker, supportive care assistant and patient services associate.

A PSW is the person who helps an individual do the things that the person would do for themselves if they were physically and or cognitively able. There is no standard scope of practice. Some of the most common roles and duties associated with a PSW are aiding with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), aiding with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), medication reminders, transportation for shopping and running errands and accompanying a client to an appointment and taking notes.

Nexgen Home Care PSWs hold a Certificate in Personal Support Work (or equivalent) obtained from a community or private college. PSWs are trained to deal with families and their loved ones in any setting and with a variety of conditions including Alzheimer’s, dementia, and palliative care.

The most important responsibility for Nexgen Care is deciding which Caregivers truly are the best of the best. All Caregivers are Certified Personal Support Workers (PSW) and must have at least 2 years of experience to even be considered for the screening process. Annually, we only accept the top 6% of all applicants.

Yes. Sometimes our clients move to a live-in facility only to realize that the care they receive there may not meet their daily needs. A Nexgen Care caregiver can be present around-the-clock or just a few hours a day, providing the personal care that may be missing in an institution as well as assistance with daily tasks and making sure your loved one stays safe and healthy.

We will work with you to make sure that the in-home care you or your loved one is receiving continue to meet your needs. This means that we will work to accommodate schedule changes, or requests to change the individual caregiver working with you and your family. We know that care plans will need to change over time as medical and physical conditions change over time. We strive to be flexible and communicative, and our priority is providing the best possible care to you and your loved one.

Services can begin within 24 to 48-hours after contacting Nexgen Care. All services begin with a free at-home assessment, meeting with the patient and family, to develop a Personal Care Plan customized to your needs and budget. The Personal Care Plan is followed by your caregiver and supervised by a registered nurse to be sure all needs are met.
